<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a crack of a lumber by drying the lumber in the cause of a surface drying on lowering pressure treatment in a coloring method or coloring device for coloring the lumer by treating the lumber with a high pressure steam and further to shorten a time for treating. Ž<P>SOLUTION: After the lumber 2 is colored by a high pressure steam treating, the lumber is treated with the lowering pressure treatment by immersing in water. In the coloring method, the lumber is a single sliced plate, the lumber is charcterized in that it is a flitched material in which a bark with a water content of 33% or more (dry base) is removed, the immersing of the lumber in the water is charcterized in that it is carried out while keeping the pressure at a state where the pressure is not lowered more 0.15 MPa than the pressure of the high pressure steam treating and the pressure lowering treatment is charcterized in that the lumber is cooled to a temperature not to be higher than 115°C.
