PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical portal apparatus with a seal assembly allowing a surgeon to efficiently use apparatuses with various diameters in a surgical procedure. SOLUTION: The surgical portal apparatus is provided with: a housing 102; a portal member extending from the housing, having a dimension for positioning within tissue and having a longitudinal opening portion for permitting passage of a surgical object; and an iris seal 104 disposed within the housing, defining the opening portion passing through the inside and adapted to establish a relationship substantially sealed from the surgical object to be introduced in the interior of the opening portion, wherein the iris seal has a plurality of leaf members adapted for movement to control the dimensioning of the opening portion in response to the introduction of the surgical object.
