A unit 12, carrying spools and guides for a wire electrode 36, is displaceable in the X co-ordinate relative to a yoke 13 of the cross-table 1 by a stepping motor 14. A workpiece 33 is clamped in a container 34, for a dielectric liquid, and the wire 36 is lead through guides 31, 32. The guide 31 is mounted on a small cross-table 2 which is displaceable in X, Y and Z co-ordinate directions. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2, not shown, each wire guide is mounted on a crosstable and independently positioned The digital control system is responsive to a punched tape and incorporates interpolators for linear, circular or parabolic movement between programmed positions. Facilities are provided for inhibiting the interpolators when a defect, such as a short-circuit, occurs in the operating gap and to initiate a limited reverse motion in response to information stored in separate return memories or memories incorporated in the interpolators. |
