<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact scanning type image projector in which a high quality image with an excellently corrected trapezoid distortion can be obtained even in an oblique image projection by a two-dimensional scanning. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The scanning type image projector PJ is provided with: a light source device P0; an incident optical system P1 which anamorphically varies the expansion state of a luminous flux emitted from the light source device P0; a deflection device P2 which deflects the luminous flux emitted from the incident optical system P1 into V-direction and H-direction which intersect with each other at right angle; and a scanning optical system P3 which guides the luminous flux deflected with the deflection device P2 onto a screen SC to form a two-dimensional image without forming an intermediate image. The luminous flux emitted from the incident optical system P1 is made incident to the deflection device P2 as divergent light in the V-direction and substantially parallel light in the H-direction. The scanning optical system P3 has at least each one of optical surface having positive power and optical surface having negative power in the V-direction, and the optical surface located at closest position to the deflection apparatus P2 is the optical surface having positive power.
