<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine capable of preventing the deterioration of emission and keeping an acceleration response of the engine favorable by controlling a mechanical compression ratio not to lower a temperature of a catalyst and to accelerate the engine with a favorable response when an acceleration demand arises. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This control device is applied to the engine provided with a compression ratio change mechanism changing the mechanical compression ratio and provided with the catalyst in an exhaust passage. The control device executes low compression ratio operation for lowering the mechanical compression ratio of the engine (S1020-S1060) if a temperature of the catalyst is low and/or there is a risk of the excessive lowering of the temperature of the catalyst, and stops the low compression ratio operation (S1020, S1070 and S1060) if it is determined that a demand for the prescribed acceleration of the engine arises, and/or it is determined that the temperature of the catalyst is lowered.
