PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplifier which suppresses an optical surge in an optical network using an optical burst signal. SOLUTION: In the optical amplifier for amplifying an input optical signal, the optical amplifier includes: a photodetector (PD) 62 for measuring the intensity of the input optical signal and a gain suppressing light source control part 63; a gain suppressing light source 64 for generating gain suppression light in which the input optical signal is perpendicular to a polarized wave; a gain suppressing light source control part 63 for operating the gain suppressing light source 64; an optical polarized wave coupler (PBS) 65 for compositing the input optical signal with the gain suppression light in the polarized wave; an optical amplifier 52 for amplifying an optical signal resulting from a polarized wave composition by the optical polarized wave coupler (PBS) 65 by using a polarized wave holding optical fiber 43 as a medium; and an optical polarized wave splitter (PBS) 53 for separating the optical signal amplified by the optical amplifier 52 to an output optical signal and the gain suppression light in the polarized wave. When the intensity of the measured input optical signal is smaller than a prescribed value, the gain suppressing light source control part 63 operates the gain suppressing light source 64 to generate the gain suppression light.
