PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and an imaging method which calculates the distance to a subject with high accuracy. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: an imaging device 107 having a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements which are disposed two-dimensionally and convert a subject image into an electric signal, the subject image being projected on a light receiving face from a subject; a reading section 111 which sequentially reads electric signals for each photoelectric conversion element from an element line including a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements arranged on one virtual line; and a distance calculating section 132 that calculates the distance to the subject based on an electric signal intensity distribution difference between a first element line set and a second element line set, the first element line set including a plurality of parallel element lines included in a ranging frame, which is an area of part of the imaging device, and a second element line set being disposed on a line extended from the first element line set in the lengthwise direction and includes a plurality of element lines included in the ranging frame and parallel to each other.
