<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an evaluation method capable of precisely evaluating magnetic stability of an SUL layer of a vertical magnetic recording medium, and to provide a vertical magnetic recording medium optimized according to the evaluation. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method of evaluating the vertical magnetic recording medium evaluates the vertical magnetic recording medium having at least soft magnetic layers and a vertical magnetic recording layer on a nonmagnetic substrate. The soft magnetic layers are separated by the nonmagnetic layer inserted therebetween. The separated nonmagnetic layers are coupled to each other by antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, and the vertical magnetic recording medium is evaluated by magnetization evaluation method using the magneto-optical Kerr effect.
