<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently cooling a heated metal article, such as steel sheet. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A water-system coolant containing soap-system surfactant (fatty acid alkaline metal salt, etc.) is used and the heated metal article, such as steel sheet, is cooled. The water-system coolant can be contained with the surfactant and water, organic solvent (at least one kind, selected from alkanol, alkylene glycol and glucoside, etc.) and chelate composition. The ratio of the chelate composition based on one weight part of the surfactant can be contained with about 0.1-5 weight parts and the ratio of the organic solvent can be about 0.0001-5 weight parts.
