PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of a conventional technique, to provide an improved starting aid mechanism, and to improve a value or possibility of the starting aid mechanism. SOLUTION: An arc discharge light source 10 comprises: a hollow center part 14; and a transparent body part 12 having end parts 16 and 18 arranged in opposition and superbly formed from crystal. A space 42 for demarcating an arc gap is provided between a cathode electrode 24 and an anode electrode 34 in the hollow center part 14, and the starting aid mechanism 41 includes an auxiliary electrode 44 substantially surrounding the anode electrode 34. The auxiliary electrode is positioned only on an outer side surface 46 of the transparent body part 12, and is electrically connected with a cathode lead-in wire 20. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
