Ultra-high carbon steel comprises (wt%): carbon 0.7 - 1.6; aluminum 5 - 12; chromium 0 - 0.4; silicon 0.01 - 2.8 and stabilizing alloying elements less than 1, the remainder being iron. Independent claims are included for: (A) a method for producing hot formed ultra-high carbon steel components with the above composition comprising heat treatment to give a structure with fine spheroidal carbides of average cross-section below 10 mu m 2>and hot forming at 800- 1100[deg] C using a deformation rate above 0.1/s; and (B) use of the steels for production of IC engine and transmission components for vehicles.
