<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aluminum nitride substrate for carrying a light emitting element, having excellent reflecting characteristics in a visible light region, requiring no formation of a gap for insulation between the surface of the aluminum nitride substrate and wiring, and having a reflective layer excellent in corrosion resistance, and to provide a light emitting device using this aluminum nitride substrate. <P>SOLUTION: The aluminum nitride substrate 10 for carrying the light emitting element includes an aluminum nitride base material 11, the wiring 12 provided on the surface of the aluminum nitride base material 11 to carry the light emitting element, and a white reflective layer 15 provided on the surface of the aluminum nitride base material 11 while having aluminum nitride as a main component.
