PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing a synthesis gas, which is useful in downstream synthesis, from a black liquor gasifier. SOLUTION: The process comprises: the steps of (a) generating a gasifier effluent stream from a black liquor in the gasifier by means of a blast and optionally a mist flow; (b) quenching the gasifier effluent stream with a gas stream; (c) then quenching the gasifier effluent with a water stream to form a raw synthesis gas; (d) further cooling and cleaning and separating the raw synthesis gas to form a purified unprocessed synthesis gas with a H<SB>2</SB>/CO molar ratio of 0.9-1.25; (e) partly converting the synthesis gas purified in the synthesis section into dimethyl ether and producing at least a product stream of DME and a hydrogen rich purge stream of the processed synthesis gas; and (f) splitting the processed synthesis gas from the synthesis section or the individuals or combinations of the split streams of the unprocessed synthesis gas and recycling the resultant to the step (a) and/or step (b).
