<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic cleaning type optical sensor for reliably removing dirt adhering to the surface of a lens without having to substantially raise development costs and product costs. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When the illuminance of light from a region to be detected in a combustion chamber 1 is lowered due to the adhesion of soot and organic or inorganic dirt to the surface of a lens 4 provided for a tip part 3 of the optical sensor 2, an image processing processor 12 of a control unit 11 energizes an interdigital electrode transducer 6 formed in the surface of the lens 4. Since surface acoustic waves are thereby generated in the surface of the lens 4, it is possible to atomize dirt adhering to the surface of the lens 4 and clean the surface of the lens 4.
