The device (1) has multiple cells (C1-Cn) i.e. capacitors, that is interconnected with a storage module. Switching devices (S1-Sn) are attached to each cell, and a control module (2) that is provided with control elements (V1-Vn) for selectively controlling the switching devices. Resistors (R1-Rn) are connected to the switching devices in series. Elements such as heat resistors or Peltier elements, are provided for influencing temperature of the cells. A temperature sensor detects the temperature of the cells. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an energy storage device.
