<p>1311144 Solutions of carboxyl group-containing polymers; inks REICHHOLD-ALBERTCHEMIE AG 25 March 1970 [2 April 1969] 14591/70 Heading C3P A composition, suitable for producing photogravure printing inks, comprises a solution in toluene of a copolymer of (a) at least oneα,#- olefinically unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acid containing not more than 4 carbon atoms, or at least one anhydride or half-ester thereof, and (b) at least one copolymerizable olefinic monomer of 2-18 carbon atoms which is free of -CONH 2 groups, said copolymer having an average Mol. Wt. of 400-3000 and containing 33-95 mole percentage of (b), and wherein the polymer also contains a telogen component. Printing inks are produced from the composition by addition of a pigment which is dispersed throughout the polymer solution. Examples of (a) are acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid, maleic anhydride or half esters of maleic acid with C 1-12 monohydric alcohols. Examples of (b) are ethylene, propylene, butylene, octene, styrene and its derivatives, derivatives of acrylic or methacrylic acid such as esters and nitriles, vinyl pyridine, vinyl pyrrolidone, allyl esters and allyl ethers. The polymers are preferably derived from telomers of styrene/maleic anhydride, octene/maleic anhydride, styrene/ acrylic acid, or styrene/vinyl toluene/maleic anhydride. Telomerizing agents may be used, such as cumene, cymene, p-xylene, toluene, benzene, chloroform, methyl ethyl ketone, diisobutyl ketone or mixtures thereof. The solution may be an up to 50% by weight solution of the copolymer, but concentrations of 20-50% are preferred. A proportion of the toluene may be replaced by benzene, xylene or a mixture thereof. In the examples, the polymer solutions are produced by solution polymerization in toluene by standard methods and the resulting solutions pigmented. The inks formed were coated on to paper. The polymers produced may contain, for example, 0À08 to 0À9 carboxyl groups per 100 units of molecular weight.</p> |
