Novel phosphorus compounds of the formula wherein R is 2-hydroxybenzophenone, which may be substituted in the rings, R1 and R11 are aryl or alkyl of at least 6 carbon atoms, the X's are the same or different alkylene or alkyleneoxy group of up to 20 carbon atoms and n,n1 and n11 are 0 or 1, are prepared by the stepwise introduction of the required groups into a phosphorus trihalide molecule using reactants which contain, in addition to the group required, an alcoholic or phenolic hydroxy group which reacts with one or more of the halogen atoms. The aryl groups (R1 and R11) may be substituted or unsubstituted mono- or poly-cyclic groups, including one or two further 2-hydroxybenzophenone groups, and it is preferred that the compound should contain at least one alkyl group having at least 12 carbon atoms in a straight or branched chain. The compounds are used as stabilizers for organic compounds, e.g. polyolefines, and are effective against degradative influences such as U.V. light, heat and oxygen.ALSO:Organic materials, particularly stereo-regular poly-a -olefines such as isotactic polymers of propylene or 4-methylpentene-1, are stabilized against degradation by e.g. heat, oxygen and U.V. light, by the addition thereto of a compound of formula wherein R is a 2-hydroxybenzophenone radical which may contain other substituents in the ring, R1 and R11 are aryl or alkyl groups of at least 6 carbon atoms, which may be 1 or 2 further 2-hydroxybenzophenone groups, the X's represent the same or different alkylene or alkyleneoxy group and n, n1 and n11 are each 0 or 1. For the best protection it is preferred that the phosphorus derivative contains at least one alkyl group having at least 12 carbon atoms in a straight or branched chain and that the R1 and R11 groups as a whole should themselves possess some stabilizing effect. The compounds are generally used in an amount of 0.2 to 2.0% by weight and may be incorporated in or used to treat shaped articles of thermoplastic polymers, e.g. fibres, filaments, films or mouldings. Other known stabilizing substances, e.g. thermal stabilizers or antioxidants may also be added.
