The resin granules are spread or dropped on to a carpet fed from a roll on to a conveyor belt which may be vibrated to spread the granules evenly on the carpet. The assembly is then fed into an oven where the granules are spread or dropped on to a carpet fed from a roll on to a conveyor belt which may be vibrated to spread the granules evenly on the carpet. The assembly is then fed into an oven where the granules are heated and melt to become embedded in the fibres of the carpet. A further layer of granules containing a blowing agent may then be spread or dropped on to the still hot sheet of flexible backing, vibrated, and heated in a further oven to form a layer of foamed resin on the back of the flexible backing. The vinyl chloride resin with blowing agent may be applied as a powder and compacted before it is heated. A layer of plastisol may be applied with a doctor blade to the back of the carpet before the application of the vinyl chloride resin granules. The granules may comprise a vinyl chloride homopolymer or a vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate copolymer or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer such as ethylene, propylene, cetyl vinyl ether, dialkyl maleate, acrylonitrile or styrene, with a plasticiser such as dioctyl phthalate, stabiliser, a pigment, or a filler such as calcium carbonate. Granules of several different colours may be incorporated in one layer and the granules with the blowing agent may comprise one of the polymers listed above with the addition of a blowing agent such as azodicarbonamide or p, p-oxybis (benzene sulphonyl hydrazine). The plastisol may comprise a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate with a di(2- ethylhexyl) phthalate stabilizer and calcium carbonate filler. Woven or non-woven polypropylene, acrylic, or jute fibres may comprise the backing of the carpeting which may have a pile of cotton, rayon, wool, nylon, polyester, acrylate, polypropylene, or glass.
