The method involves assigning an active Radio frequency identification (RFID)transponder to the piece of transportation. The RFID transponder is coupled with a sensor element. The sensor element detects an environmental characteristic on the transport route. The sensor element transmits a warning signal using the active RFID transponder, if the environmental characteristic falls below or exceeds a pre-defined limit value. An independent claim is included for a bidirectional communication unit for securing a suitable transport route for a piece of transportation.
