A nucleic acid (I) isolated from Neisseria encodes a branching enzyme (II). (I) has a fully defined 2475 bp sequence (given in the specification and encodes; (i) a protein with a fully defined 762 amino acid sequence (given in the specification); or (ii) a protein encoded by the insert in plasmid DSM 12425. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a vector containing (I); (2) host cells transformed with (I) or the vector in (1); (3) production of (II) by in vitro transcription and translation of (I); (4) antibodies (Ab) against (II); (5) transgenic plant cell containing (I), linked to regulatory sequences functional in plants; (6) transgenic plants containing the cells of (5) and their harvestable parts; (7) production of the plants of (h); (8) native regulatory region (RR) that controls transcription of (I) in bacteria; and (9) in vitro production of alpha -1,6-branched alpha -1,4-glucans (III) using sucrose as substrate and a combination of an amylosucrase and a branching enzyme (BE). |
