[Also in Group XXXVI] In making battery separators a web of absorbent paper, Fig. 1, is impregnated, e.g. uniformly, with a pre-condensate of a thermosetting resin, discontinuous protuberances 2 are pressed or embossed in the paper and it is then heated to cure and set the resin. The paper may then be subjected to a wetting-out treatment. The protuberances may be staggered ridges disposed in rows, as shown, or they may be dome- or diamond-shaped. They may be formed on both sides of the paper. The paper may contain between 1 and 3 per cent by weight of melamine. For example, kraft paper from a roll 3, Fig. 3, is immersed in or floated on an aqueous solution 6 of a pre-condensate of a thermosetting resin. The solution may contain about 30 per cent by volume of a pre-condensate of a phenol-formaldehyde resin and about 0.25 per cent of sodium hydroxide. The paper, thus impregnated, e.g. after being passed between rollers, not shown, to remove surplus solution and secure uniform impregnation, is passed through a heated chamber 8, then between embossing rollers 10 and 11, then through a curing oven 12 and is finally cut into separators by rotating knives 14. One embossing roller may be formed with metallic protuberances: the other may be made of relatively hard plastic material. |
