PURPOSE: A scale class judging system and a scale reducing method for a slab extracted from a heating furnace are provided to suppress the generation of scale on the slab and remove generated scales easily. CONSTITUTION: A scale class judging system for a slab extracted from a heating furnace comprises a CCD camera(600), an image analysis part(611), and a rating part(612). The CCD camera captures surface images of the slab. The image analysis part analyzes the slab surface images and calculates the surface area of the slab and the surface area in which scales exist from the obtained images. The rating part quantifies the ratio of the surface area in which the scales exist to the surface area of the slab, and determines the class of the surface scale based on the set class corresponding to the quantized ratio.
