The method involves regenerating a particle filter. A nitrogen oxide trap is desulfurized after beginning regeneration of the particle filter and before ending regeneration of the particle filter so that desulfurization of the nitrogen oxide trap and regeneration of the particle filter are carried out simultaneously and partially. The desulfurization of the nitrogen oxide is initiated during regeneration of the particle filter after verifying that the remaining mass of particles (MP) in the filter is below a predefined threshold (SE). An independent claim is included for a power train of a motor vehicle comprising an engine.
