PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency and safeness of endoscopy by securing a sufficient visibility for removing the endoscope from the body of a subject even if an abnormality occurs in a fan during the lighting of main light. SOLUTION: The light source device is provided with a temperature sensor 61 to sense the rotation of the fan 60 in the vicinity of a fan 60. When the revolution speed of the fan 60 becomes equal to or lower than a fixed value during the lighting of a xenon lamp 54, a CPU 53 makes the xenon lamp 54 continue to light for a fixed period and subsequently turns it off. When the fan 60 is abnormal, the light source can keep a higher luminous energy than when it immediately turns off the xenon lamp 54 or it switches to a halogen lamp 55 as a standby lamp, and a secure sufficient visibility of the body cavity and permits the electronic endoscope 5 to be safely and efficiently extracted from the body cavity. Since the xenon lamp 54 is turned off after a fixed period, the light source device 8 is not excessively heated due to use over a fixed period or due to failure to turn it off.
