PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a modified polymer by reaction among a polymer (A), a nitroxide radical compound (B), a radical initiator (C) and a radical-polymerizable monomer (D) while suppressing gelling and polymer main chain deterioration. SOLUTION: The method for producing the modified polymer comprises the first step of conducting a mixing reaction of the components (A) to (C) in a nonsolvent system in a kneader and the second step of subsequently reacting the component (D) to effect grafting the component (D) to the component (A). In this method, the mixing reaction conditions in the first step meet the requirements (1) and (2) as described below: (1) the intersplit decomposition ratesΔX from the reaction time point t to (t+Δt) for the component (C) are determined by the formula below, and the mixing reaction is continued untilΣΔX comes to 0.985. (2) The mixing reaction is not continued for 5 min or longer in such a state thatΣΔX stands at 1.000 or greater; wherein the formula is as follows:ΔX=exp(-k×t)[1-exp(-k×Δt)] (k is the reaction rate constant for the component (C)).
