A system for controlling the idling speed of a combustion engine coupled to an automatic drive comprises a sensor (32) to detect the torque converter (21) rotational condition and generate a signal, a controller (30) programmed to give a base and a target idling speed according to this signal if the drive is in region (D) in an idling state. An Independent claim is also included for a process for controlling the system above.
