<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a patterned magnetic recording medium of which the magnetic dot pattern achieving a desired recording density can provide thermal magnetic stability, recording facility and ease of fabrication in combination with one another. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The patterned magnetic recording medium includes magnetic dots with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy which are patterned to form a recording track, and is characterized in that the magnetic dot has a thickness t of 15 nm or less, a dot size (a) in a cross track direction is a half or less of a dot pattern period, a saturation magnetization M<SB>s</SB>is higher than 650 emu/cm<SP>3</SP>, a saturation magnetic field H<SB>s</SB>is lower than 18 kOe, and a magnetic reversal starting field H<SB>n</SB>(Oe) satisfies the relationship given below: H<SB>n</SB>≥4.2×10<SP>4</SP>k<SB>B</SB>/M<SB>s</SB>V, where k<SB>B</SB>is the Boltzmann constant (erg/degree) and V is the volume (cm<SP>3</SP>) of the magnetic dot.
