PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dirt transfer inhibitor capable of developing enough dirt readhesion prevention effectiveness at washing conditions in homes, particularly at washing conditions easy to promote the dirt readhesion because of a little usage of water as used in drum type washers, and to provide a detergent composition containing the inhibitor. SOLUTION: This dirt transfer inhibitor comprises a modified smectite clay mineral produced by catalytically treating an acrylic acid polymer and a smectite clay mineral in the presence of an aqueous medium.
