PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulation device capable of effectively cooling a liquid crystal panel. SOLUTION: The optical modulation device 451 includes the liquid crystal panel 8 having a first substrate 82 and a second substrate 81, and a panel holding body 9. First and second translucent substrates 85 and 84 smaller than the respective substrates 82 and 81 in plan view are provided on outer surfaces of the substrates 82 and 81. The panel holding body 9 includes a holding frame 90 having a first aperture 921 formed at a bottom part and having a housing recessed part 936 in which the liquid crystal panel 8 is installed, and an interposing member 94 having a second aperture 941 in which the second translucent substrate 84 is inserted. By inserting the first translucent substrate 85 in the first aperture 921, the bottom part of the housing recessed part 936 of the holding frame 90 comes into surface-contact with the first substrate 82.
