PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear for an internal combustion engine capable of inhibiting useless energy consumption for operating the variable valve gear in a cylinder bank in which operation of cylinders is deactivated by execution of cylinder deactivation operation. SOLUTION: In the engine 1, all cylinder operation in which all of cylinders in each bank 14, 15 are operated is normally executed and cylinder deactivation operation in which operation of the cylinders in one bank 15 is deactivated and cylinders in another bank 14 are operated is executed in a predetermined engine operation range. During execution of cylinder deactivation operation of the engine 1, open and close of intake valves are stopped by a lift stop mechanism in the bank 15 and electricity carry to a motor of the variable valve gear varying valve timing of the intake valve is stopped. Consequently, useless energy consumption for the operation, electric power consumption of the motor in the concrete can be accurately inhibited without uselessly operating the variable valve gear at that time.
