An improved lambda emission control for the exhaust system of an IC engine has sensors to determine the relative ratio of carbon- and nitrous oxide products. The mixture setting is made slightly leaner for instances where a lower ratio of nitrous oxide and a higher ratio of carbon products require more oxidation, and vice versa for higher ratios of nitrous oxide requiring a richer mixture for reduction of same. The control system is an enhancement of the existing control programme where the optimum mixture is determined as the mean value between the rich and lean points in the engine operation.
