1281425 Calculators INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 June 1970 [30 June 1969] 29314/70 Heading G4A Accounting apparatus comprises a printer, and a keyboard for entering data, printer control signals and accounting instructions, and in a MANUAL mode the printer prints at positions controlled by the printer control signals the results of arithmetic operations on the data performed in accordance with the accounting instructions, and in a LOAD mode the printer control signals and accounting instructions when entered by the keyboard are stored in a memory as a programme for use in connection wit hfurther data to be entered by the keyboard. Operation in the LOAD mode is similar to the MANUAL mode except that the above storing takes place as well. In an AUTO mode, a programme entered as above is executed using keyboard-entered data. In a TYPE mode keyboard input is simply printed out. Entered programmes are stored in a 128-byte "user's" portion of the memory, each programme ending with a "carrier return" code. Any of ten such programmes can be selected for execution by pressing a respective key, the programme being located by counting "carrier return" codes. Keys are also provided, inter alia, for selecting the mode, controlling a magnetic card input/output unit (which can be fed from the keyboard or elsewhere in the apparatus and can supply programmes, data and constant information to the apparatus), entering a decimal point, and selecting a working register. Rotary switches on a control panel are provided to specify maximum input and output field lengths, and output decimal point position. The memory also includes 640 micro-instructions, various working registers, input and output code conversion information (including for binary to BCD conversion on print-out), constant information, and 16 totals registers for respective multidigit (wide) columns on the accounting form being printed on, these totals registers being addressed by a counter incremented by pressing a key on the keyboard. Another key causes tabbing past such a column. All input and output is via a common byte register, and a word register is provided for word assembly. An accumulator is also provided.
