The lower hinge device 25 is a double leaf hinge with one leaf 27 attached to the door 17, the other leaf 28 being supported by a pivot stud 29. The upper hinge device 26 consists of a double leaf hinge and a foldable link mechanism. One leaf 32 of the hinge is supported by a pivot member 33 mounted on and extending longitudinally of the door, the second leaf 36 is pivotally connected to an elongated member 41 by a pivot 38, the member 41 being pivotally mounted on the vehicle body by pivot stud 43. When opening the door, the door first tilts outwards about pivot 29 while the foldable link mechanism unfolds until the axis of the two pintles 31 and 34 are aligned forming a hinge axis 45 about which the door swings. The door is prevented from swinging in any other position by the skewed relationship of the pintle axes, and the operation of the link mechanism is controlled by a counterbalance spring 41. |
