<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubbing cloth material for manufacturing an optical compensation film nearly free from bright spot occurrence frequency even when the film is widened and elongated. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The rubbing cloth material includes a primary texture structure comprising the warp 2 and the weft 3 and pile strings 4 woven into the primary texture structure. The length (A) of a circular or elliptical circumference inscribed in the cross-sectional shape of the pile strings 4 and the length (S) of the circumference of the cross-section of the pile strings 4 satisfy a formula (1).
