<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an access control system and access control method for flexibly authenticating a person. <P>SOLUTION: This access control system, at an entrance of a target area, acquires a unique face image from a person who wants to enter or leave the area, determines the similarity between the acquired face image and dictionary information registered in advance by collating them with each other, identify the person by comparing the determined similarity with a preset threshold for determination, and controls the access of the person to the area based on the authentication result.
