PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology of suppressing degradation in formation positioning accuracy of an image to a recording medium. SOLUTION: The time when toner images reach a transfer device 20, which is calculated on the basis of timing of forming toner images on a transfer belt 15 in image forming units 10Y, 10M, 10C, and 10K, is compared with the time the toner images reach the transfer device 20, which is calculated, on the basis of an output from an image position detection sensor 44 that optically detects the toner images formed on the transfer belt 15. When there is a predetermined relation among them, the position of an image to be formed on paper is adjusted, by using the latter information to control paper conveyance, the subsequent image formation timing, or the subsequent image forming processes. When there is no predetermined relation among them, the position of an image to be formed on paper is adjusted, by using former information to control paper conveyance, the subsequent image formation timing, or the subsequent image forming processes.
