PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a foreign matter detection device of an elevator capable of surely detecting foreign matter caught between a first door and a second door. SOLUTION: A string detection shoe driving device 13 as a horizontal direction driving device is attached to a back face part of a door 3 of a second car. A string detection shoe 14 as a movable member is attached to the string detection shoe driving device 13. The string detection shoe 14 can be displaced between a retraction position where the shoe positions at a back part of the door 3 of the second car and an advance position where the shoe is abutted to a contact member 12. The string detection shoe 14 is displaced to the retraction position when all the doors 2, 3 of the first car and the second car are opened by the string detection shoe driving device 13. The string detection shoe 14 is displaced to the advance position when all the doors 2, 3 of the first car and the second car are closed by the string detection shoe driving device 13.
