<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and method for stably collating images with deformation with high accuracy by calculating similarities for each color in consideration of the distribution profiles of the images to be collated. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus and method includes: counting the number of pixels of the same color by row or column; creating a histogram for each color; quantizing the number of pixels counted in each histogram, based on the preset range of pixel numbers; assigning a symbol to each value quantized; converting the histograms into symbol sequences each composed of a plurality of symbols; coupling the symbol sequences obtained for all the colors; collating the coupled symbol sequences obtained for the images; and evaluating both images to be similar if there are a designated number or more of common symbols.
