1333656 Chucks; tool shanks BENDIX CORP 12 Jan 1971 [12 Jan 1970] 1516/71 Headings B3B and B3C A holder assembly, which may be used to hold a tool or other member having a shank of non-circular cross-section, comprises a receiver, of non-circular cross-section, for receiving the shank of the member, and means for rotating the shank relative to the receiver to wedge the shank in the bore before torque is applied to the shank in use of the member. In the embodiment shown, the holder assembly is a chuck and embodies a tapered adapter 16 to which are mounted a locking ring 22 and a bushing 18 both of which have polygonal bores of approximately triangular section. The locking ring 22 can be rotated by actuation of a screw 30 which bears on a pin 34 which acts eccentrically upon the ring. Wedging action between the ring, as it rotates, and an inserted polygonal tool shank 46 causes the latter to be rotated until it wedges against the bushing 18. During a machining operation, cutting forces lead to an increase in the wedging, the forces of which are distributed more uniformly along the shank than hitherto in the prior art. In other embodiments (not shown), the locking ring could be replaced by set-screws for acting directly upon flats of the tool shank; the polygonal shapes of the various bores and shank may be replaced by other wedge-action drives; and the polygon may be four-sided, Also, the adapter 16 may, instead of tapered shank 17, have a flange for bolting to a mating flange on the spindle face, or the spindle and chuck may be integral, thus obviating the need for an adapter. |
