<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate nonuniformity of color reproduction which may be generated between a primary color and a multi-order color by controlling the total amount of color materials according to the surface coarseness and type of paper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A color material total amount setup part 305 sets up the total amount of color materials based on the detected surface coarseness of the paper. It is set up so that the total amount of color materials gets smaller as the surface coarseness be larger when the surface coarseness of the paper is above a threshold value. The total amount of color materials is set to be constant when the surface coarseness of the paper is below the threshold value. A total amount regulation part 303 regulates the total amount so that the total color material amount is not above the set total amount of color materials for a γ-corrected CMYK signal.
