<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem, wherein even though a write optical system is provided, in which scanning is performed by using a polygon mirror, together with a surface-emitting laser (vertical resonator type vertical cavity surface emitting laser, VCSEL) for turning the image high density and speeding up the output of the image in the field of electrophotography, since increase in the number of beams results in the increase, in the distance in the subscanning direction between the beams on both ends which are scanned once, shifting of the distance between the scanning lines is increased, when the magnitude of the optical system of an optical scanner shifts from a desired value. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The optical scanner has a lens having negative power at least in the subscanning direction and a lens having at least positive power between a light source 1; and by providing deflecting means 9 and 10 for both the lenses with an adjustable means in the optical axis direction magnification of an optical system is set adjustable, and as a result, a desired scanning line distance is obtained.
