The method involves providing an ignition pulse for controlling a passenger protection unit (PS) of a vehicle (FZ) by using a microcontroller (muC) of a controlling device (SG). An ignition pulse regulator is connected to an ignition pulse driver e.g. sense FET, for regulating the ignition pulse. An ignition pulse measurement is carried out independent of the ignition pulse regulation, where the pulse regulation and the pulse measurement are carried out by using different threshold value comparisons. An independent claim is also included for a controlling device for controlling a passenger protection unit of a vehicle.
