<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus wherein, in a monochromatic mode, the reduction in lives of yellow, magenta and cyan photoreceptor drums can be suppressed, and also, the vibration of a transfer belt can be suppressed, then, pitch irregularities can be suppressed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a color mode where the yellow, magenta, cyan and black photoreceptor drums 15Y, 15M, 15C and 15K disposed in order along the rotating direction of the transfer belt 2 come into contact with the transfer belt 2; and the monochromatic mode where only the black photoreceptor drum comes into contact with the transfer belt. The image forming apparatus is characterized in that a tension roller 10 is disposed on the downstream side of the magenta photoreceptor drum in the rotating direction of the transfer belt, and on the upstream side of the black photoreceptor drum in the rotating direction of the transfer belt.
