<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device capable of shortening an access time while suppressing the heat generation of a beam expander. <P>SOLUTION: A microcomputer 21 manages the operation time and the pause time of a stepping motor 24 for moving the movable lens 22b of a beam expander 23, and limits the subsequent continuous driving frequency of the stepping motor 24 to a permitted frequency or less according to the length of pause time immediately before. When the length of the pause time is shorter than a threshold value, or when the continuous driving frequency of the stepping motor reaches the permitted frequency, the driving of a next stepping motor is started after the passage of predetermined standby time.
