<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a line head and an image forming apparatus using the line head provided with a plurality of light emitting element lines and making effective use of them. <P>SOLUTION: The line head 10 is provided with a light emitting element line 1 for normal operation and a light emitting element line 2 for preliminary operation. Light emitting elements D00-D23 using organic EL elements, for instance, are arrayed in the light emitting element line 1, and light emitting elements D50-D73 using organic EL elements are arrayed in the light emitting element line 2. The line head 10 has a positive power line 4, negative power lines 5, 6, and a change over switch 3.
