PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of a breakage accident by delaying the deforming speed of an electrostrictive phenomenon caused by the discharge of a ferroelectric ceramic capacitor when insulation breakdown takes place between the electrodes of an arc tube. SOLUTION: The ferroelectric ceramic capacitor 13 which causes charge and discharge to output high-voltage starting pulses from a stabilizer when a voltage of a preset resistance voltage or higher is applied thereto, a semiconductor switch 15 which is changed over into a conducting condition when a voltage of a preset break-over voltage or higher is applied thereto, and a time constant adjusting resistance 14 which delays a time for discharging charges from the capacitor when the insulation breakdown is given to the arc tube, are connected in series to a starting circuit 4 which is stored and arranged in an outer tube 2 of a metal halide lamp 1 while being connected in parallel to the arc tube 3.
