<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a TDI type linear image sensor which has the switching function of the number of TDI stages and suppresses coupling noise, and its driving method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Block gates for limiting the number of TDI stages in a pixel group 110 are provided in a plurality of parts, and the block gates are allocated to paired transfer gates with the same numbers. Also, in the driving method, a first DC voltage is supplied to a first block gate corresponding to the number of the TDI stages desired to be set, a second DC voltage larger than the first DC voltage is supplied to a second block gate positioned on the side of a counter vertical transfer direction 181a more than the first block gate, and furthermore, a transfer clock is supplied to the remaining block gates.
