PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing sphericalα-alumina having a small specific surface area from a powderyα-alumina precursor. SOLUTION: The production method includes granulating the powderyα-alumina precursor while adding an aqueous slurry containingα-alumina seed crystals having an average particle diameter of≤0.2μm to the precursor, and firing the resultantα-alumina precursor granules. A sapphire single crystal can be produced by filling a crucible with sphericalα-alumina obtained by the production method, melting theα-alumina by heating, and crystallizing the resultant melt under pulling.
