YEAST CAPABLE OF PRODUCING ETHANOL FROM XYLOSE

Disclosed is a yeast having an excellent ability to produce ethanol from xylose.  The yeast is a transgenic yeast which is produced by introducing a gene encoding sorbitol dehydrogenase into a host yeast in such a manner that the gene can be expressed in the host yeast, or a transgenic yeast in which the expression of the gene is activated.  In the transgenic yeast, the activity to convert xylitol into xylulose is enhanced compared with that before the introduction of the gene or the activation of the expression of the gene.
