This method determines a reference lateral position of a copy (30) in a folding machine (2), the copy (30) having a given width and being delimited by a first lateral edge (44) and a second lateral edge (46), the folding machine(2) being designed to convey the copy (30) in a path and having at least two first conveying members (36) that convey the copy over a first portion of the path (32), each first conveying member (36) defining, for each of the first and second lateral edges (44, 46), a first preferred lateral zone (48). At least one of the first preferred lateral zones (48) extends laterally beyond the associated first conveying member (36) and partially laterally straddles this first conveying member (36). The reference lateral position is determined in such a way that at least the first lateral edge (44) lies inside a first preferred zone associated with this first lateral edge (44).
